Consultations

I am available for one-on-one manuscript consultations, from short stories to full-length novels. Clients and students have had their work published in 3 AM Magazine, Gulf Coast, Black Warrior Review, Hippocampus Magazine, Hobart Pulp, The Nervous Breakdown, Expat Literary Journal, and others. Manuscript clients have had their full-lengths published by various indie presses.

To enquire about availability and price, please send an email to elle.gnash@gmail.com to tell me a little bit about your project, the length (by page, where a page is equal to 12 pt. Times New Roman font, double-spaced), and your goals with the manuscript. Every consultation comes with a complimentary Zoom/Skype consult to discuss the piece.

TEXTURES: A WRITING WORKSHOP
2021: THREE MONTH ONLINE SHORT STORY/FICTION MENTORSHIP

  • Runs: March 22, 2021 — June 14, 2021
  • Twelve Weeks
  • Apply by March 1, 2021.
  • Led by Elle Nash.

Good writing has a feel to it, a texture between the fingers. Often, understanding our own work requires the sharpening of intuition. Something felt in the gut that points us in the right direction. Our workshop aims to develop that intuition.

You

Participants can be at any stage of their short story or longer fiction work but will have some stories or drafts already developed. The ideal participant will come to this mentorship ready to deeply revise on the macro-level (regarding structure, plot, character pacing, theme) and on the micro-level (voice, word choice, grammar, dialogue). Applicants should have at least one draft ready before class (up to 5,000 words).

THE WORKSHOP: A THREE MONTH MENTORSHIP

The goal of this mentorship is to: polish up to three stories or chapters of up to 5,000 words; OR polish one longer piece, in three chunks, of up to 15,000 words, such as a chapbook or novella.

This mentorship is meant to motivate and push you out of your comfort zone; to learn to approach stories from the ground up; to think critically about elements of your work; to teach you how to develop your taste as a writer. As an applicant, you should have some basic experience in creative writing but are looking for a more intensive experience with outside eyes and to learn to edit yourself better.

This mentorship will be guided by a series of 12 discussions on craft: starting with first sentences, how to open a story, perspective in fiction, psychic distance, developing scenes, alienation, motivation and desire, plot and tension, how to self-edit, redemptive voice, and publishing and submitting.

You will also be able to send Elle questions and talk through difficulties you may run into over the three month period. Scheduled Zoom or phone meetings will occur once a month. You will be expected to submit 5,000 words (20 pages) or less of your work every month for feedback from Elle and from your peers, and discuss it during your individual monthly meeting with Elle.
